Jordan has issued a directive requiring all airlines landing at its airports to carry an additional 45 minutes of fuel reserves.

This precautionary measure comes amid growing tensions between Iran and Israel, sparked by the recent assassinations of high-ranking members of Hamas and Hezbollah.

Aviation industry experts say this move is a proactive step by Jordan in anticipation of a potential closure of its airspace, similar to what occurred during previous regional conflicts.

Concerns over a wider conflict have led to a number of airlines avoiding airspace over Iran, Lebanon, and Israel. Experts warn that a full-scale conflict in the region could result in the closure of some of the world’s busiest air routes, causing significant disruptions to global air travel.

Mark Zee, CEO of OPSGROUP, a flight risk information provider, has drawn parallels between the current situation and the April aerial attacks on Israel. He noted that Jordan was the first country to close its airspace during that conflict, highlighting the kingdom’s proactive approach to airspace security. The additional fuel requirement is designed to provide aircraft with sufficient reserves to exit Jordanian airspace in the event of an emergency.

The potential impact on global aviation is substantial. The ongoing war in Ukraine has already placed significant strain on European airspace, and a closure of Middle Eastern airspace would exacerbate these challenges. Industry experts warn of a potential “monumental reordering” of international air traffic if the region’s skies are closed for an extended period.

As the situation in the Middle East remains volatile, airlines and passengers alike are closely monitoring developments. The extra fuel requirement imposed by Jordan serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of escalating tensions in the region.
