Cape Town - The treasurer of the SA Football Association (Safa) Cape Town Region, Wayne Weitz, will remain on precautionary suspension.

This after the Safa CT regional executive committee recommended that the Finance Committee be given a 30-day extension to conclude outstanding concerns.

Weitz was suspended after Safa launched an investigation into several alleged governance irregularities identified within the regional operations.

The investigation is believed to have gone as far back as the financial year in November 2023.

The football body said that on June 27, 2024, the regional executive committee received a report from a committee headed by Siviwe Tyali, chair of the finance committee, which examined the alleged violations.

Safa CT noted that the investigation primarily focused on assessing the adherence to financial protocols and the accuracy of reported financial activities.

Weitz’s case was at the top of the list when Safa's top hierarchy recently convened at the Samaj Centre in Gatesville for a general council meeting.

The executive committee proposed to the general council that the finance committee be given more time to wrap up their work.

The president of Safa CT, Bennett Bailey, said that 30 more days were needed while Weitz’s suspension continued.

“There was a couple of things outstanding that they couldn’t get answers to. There are questions that couldn’t be answered. A report will then be given, and the executive will consider it within 30 days. We always agreed that the suspension remains in place,” he said.

Weitz, who was elected into the position in 2022, is also the president of the Local Football Association in Bontheuwel.

The Cape Argus approached Weitz for comment yesterday but he is yet to respond.

According to Bailey, if it is found that there were serious breaches, the executive or general council would have to recommend the next steps.

“That I don’t want to predict because the next steps can mean a lot of things.”

Bailey said the report was treated with confidentiality as it involved one of the good names within the soccer fraternity.

“If a report will be made available, it will be made available in October in a form of a media release,” Bailey said.

Meanwhile, Reyaad Joseph was elected unopposed as the general secretary of Safa CT.

Safa also announced a four-year technical partnership deal with Masita valued at R3.2 million in the form of apparel sponsorship.
